Immediately following Will Smith smacking Chris Rock at the Oscars, it was reported that Denzel Washington spoke to Smith about the incident and offered him some words. Washington went on to tell Smith, “At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you.” Now, Washington has given more detail as to what he meant.
While speaking at a leadership summit for pastor T.D. Jakes, Washington said, “There's a saying: When the devil ignores you, you know you're doing something wrong. The devil goes, 'Oh, no, leave him alone. He's my favorite.'" The actor didn’t stop there, saying, “Conversely, when the devil comes at you, maybe it's because you're trying to do something right. And for whatever reason, the devil got ahold of him that night.” Washington noted Tyler Perry stepped in to chat with Will, saying they prayed with one another.
Washington also talked about the immediate issue between Rock and Smith, noting he had to step in between the two. “I couldn't have sat in my seat. No way I could have sat in my seat. That's just not who I am.” News of this comes after Will Smith reportedly resigned from the Academy.
