A former Democratic donor named Ed Buck has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for injecting lethal doses of methamphetamine into a pair of Black men before enticing them to partake in prostitution.
According to reports, the 67-year-old assailant would often target young, Black men who were experiencing homelessness and/or poverty before encouraging them to come back to his apartment for sexually charged encounters, where he would distribute drugs much to their detriment. Two of the most notable victims were Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean, who each died from an overdose in 2017 and 2019. According to the sentencing memorandum, Buck drugged both men with methamphetamine (until they became comatose) at his West Hollywood apartment during what he called "party and play" sessions.
On the surface, Buck is a former member of the California Electoral College who is said to have donated over $500,000 to Democratic causes over the years. But in the shadows, he surfed the internet -- including social media platforms and escort services -- in search of his next victims. This undoubtedly contributed to the fact there were more than 20 witnesses who testified during his two-week trial. In the end, the Phoenix native was convicted on two counts of distribution of controlled substances resulting in death.
