When a local DJ named Kim Koko Hunter stepped onto the scene at a charity event in Scottsdale, Arizona, it was meant to commence an evening of fun for the good people of the Scottsdale Unified School District’s Hopi Elementary PTA and perhaps it did. But the blissful feeling probably didn't last long because once photos surfaced of DJ Kim Koko Hunter standing next to an ASU instructor and a local Liberian, two activists staunchly accused the school district of being racist.

The reason for their accusation is because they believed that DJ Kim Koko Hunter was a White man who dressed himself up in flashy disco-inspired attire, covered himself in "blackface" makeup, and threw on an Afro wig for good measure. The two activists in question, Stuart Rhoden and Jill Lassen, are regarded as diversity and inclusion gurus that have been tabbed to sniff out racism and discriminatory situations in the workplace. But this time around, it looks like their assessment of DJ Kim Koko Hunter was a bit presumptuous.

“The DJ that the Hopi PTA hire[d] was, in fact a Black man,” Hopi PTA president Megan Livengood wrote in response to Lassen in a message obtained by the outlet. “It is insulting that you feel myself or PTA condone racist behavior or encourage it by posting on social media.”

To that, Jill Lassen apologized for making allegations of racism without knowing the facts and said, “You are right, we should’ve reached out and inquired before making such accusations. I cannot fathom the hurt, anger, and frustration you felt after you and others volunteered countless hours on your event. Again I truly apologize.”

But her partner, Stuart Rhoden, wasn't nearly as apologetic for his role in the debacle. Instead, he held firm in his beliefs and blamed the idea that he might have been a tad bit inaccurate on the fact that the DJ may have been wearing makeup and/or the lighting of the venue simply wasn't bright enough.

“Let me be clear, a black man, apparently in black face is an entirely different discussion than a White person,” he wrote on Facebook. “However… it seems at the very least he is in darker make-up if not ‘Black face’ or I am completely mistaken and it’s the lighting of the patio.”

As of now, there is no word on whether or not lawsuits are forthcoming. For more on this story, click the link below.
