The last 60 days in this country have seen back-to-back periodical celebrations of Black History Month and Women's History Month. Now, thanks to a Black mayor by the name of Curtis Hayes, the 30 days that follow March will hereby be known as "Confederate History Month."
The recent proclamation by the mayor of Livington, Tennessee only applies to the local townsfolk. But, the sentiment has gained significant momentum over the years as it is now being recognized in a variety of states that used to be a part of the Confederacy until it disbanded back in 1865.
Nevertheless, part of the Confederacy's infamous legacy has lived on through a supremacist terrorist group known as the Ku Klux Klan, because it was started by six former officers of the Confederate army. Hence, a lot of deeply rooted resentment for everything that the Confederacy represented back then, including slavery, still remains. This is why Mayor Curtis Hayes has caused such an uproar amongst the Black community for signing this controversial declaration into action. Another reason for the turbulence is that Mayor Hayes took a picture with a contingent from the Sons of Confederate Veterans to commemorate the official signing. The image of a Black man surrounded by the organizations' group members and confederate flags has already gone viral.
The 125-year-old neo-Confederate group insists that their intentions for the newly established "Confederate History Month" are merely to honor their Southern heritage in a non-confrontational manner. A statement from the organization's website reads, "The Sons of Confederate Veterans neither embraces, nor espouses acts or ideologies of racial and religious bigotry, and further, condemns the misuse of its sacred symbols and flags in the conduct of same."
Only time will tell if that notion will hold true, but for now, it looks like their path will forever be intertwined with Mayor Hayes and their unlikely pairing.
