Recently, the Guinness World Records took to social media to reveal the world’s oldest person—Kane Tanaka passed away at 119.
Guinness World Records acknowledged the Japanese woman in 2019 as the world’s oldest person. Tanaka was born on January 2, 1903, and a statement was released by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare regarding the passing of Tanaka. Tanaka is the second oldest person ever recorded, “behind only Jeanne Calment, who lived to the age of 122.”
According to CNN, Tanaka survived cancer and lived through two world wars and the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. Local governor Seitaro Hattori spoke on the life of Tanaka in a statement, saying, “I am extremely saddened by the news. I was looking forward to seeing Kane-san on this year’s Respect for the Aged Day (a national holiday in September) and celebrating together with her favorite soda and chocolate.”
