Two years ago, Zaya Wade came out as a transgender girl. The highly-publicized revelation from Dwyane Wade's 11-year-old daughter made headlines all over the world, some of which were highly supportive while others were of the unsavory variety. Nevertheless, it was the way in which her father remained unwavering in his support that gave hope to the trans community on a global scale. Since then, Dwyane and his wife, Gabrielle Union have become advocates for the LGBTQ+ demographic. Thus, when a reporter from Variety caught up with the power couple on the red carpet at this year's Met Gala, they shared a very encouraging message for other parents who wish to navigate a successful family life for their transgender kid(s).
“The moment when you were in the hospital and you grabbed your daughter and you looked at your daughter, all the emotions that went through your mind and how much love filled your heart at that moment. Don’t let that ever leave you — no matter what,” Dwyane said. “The one thing we do as parents is we find our 'mini-mes' and we try to make them just like us, but our kids are going to be who they are, and it’s our job to help mold them and try to push them in the places that they want to go."
“And we believe them when they tell us who they are,” added Union.
