Two years ago, Chet Hanks debuted his now-famous "Jamaican accent" on the red carpet of the Golden Globes. The clip of his attempt at speaking the Patois language went viral and it even earned him a nod from Jamaican celebrities, such as Kranium, who got a kick out of the footage when it was brought to his attention. Since then, Hanks has been seen utilizing his "Jamaican accent" in various social media posts and interviews, upon requests. The 31-year-old actor even appeared on an episode of Atlanta this year as a character that had a West Indian accent because he was raised by a Black woman from the Caribbean.
Nevertheless, Hanks has also garnered his fair share of negativity for his usage of the Patois language because he is Caucasian and neither of his famous parents (Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson) is from Jamaica. So, when the actor/rapper was given the chance to atone for his famous "Jamaican accent" on the late-night talk show, Ziwe, he looked right into the "Apology Cam" and refused to do so, much to the dismay of the comedic interviewer.
"Are there any marginalized communities you want to apologize to?" asked the host. "I don't know, maybe the Patois community?"
"No," responded Hanks. "I don't feel like I've truly done anything offensive."
"You don't see it as cultural appropriation? You see it as a celebration of culture," stated Ziwa. "And then it's like social justice warriors can like go kick rocks?"
"Yeah," replied Hanks and he shrugged his shoulders and looked at Ziwa. "I one hundred percent agree. Social justice warriors can kick rocks."
