Weeks from now, Juneteenth will be celebrated across the country. The first year the holiday was federally recognized was in 2021, and the holiday commemorates the emancipation of African Americans who were slaves. The Juneteenth National Independence Act was passed by Joe Biden and found many showing their love for the new holiday. Some brands like IKEA ultimately faced backlash after trying to cater to the holiday with “racially insensitive” food arrangements related to Juneteenth. Now, Wal-Mart is facing backlash after the corporation revealed Juneteenth packaging for their ice cream and other products.

The packaging of the controversial ice cream says, “Share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation, and enduring hope.” Many have taken to social media to express their dislike for the brand’s gesture, calling the packaging “offensive.” Since then, Wal Mart has issued a statement on the matter, noting they pulled the ice cream from shelves.

“Juneteenth holiday marks a celebration of freedom and independence. However, we received feedback that a few items caused concern for some of our customers, and we sincerely apologize. We are reviewing our assortment and will remove items as appropriate,” Wal Mart said in a statement to FOX. Take a look above.
