Last year, the city of Chicago bore witness to 37 shootings and three murders on Memorial Day weekend. This year, those numbers increased exponentially as it is now being reported that at least 54 shootings took during Memorial Day weekend, which resulted in nine deaths. As of now, the death toll is still being tallied. This is especially disheartening considering the fact that these shootings all took place, on the heels of the infamous Robb Elementary School mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
According to eyewitness accounts, some of the most horrific instances of gun violence in Chicago this past weekend included a 19-year-old woman getting shot while riding her bicycle in the 200 block of N. Breakwater Access and a couple getting shot while standing near an alleyway in the 300 Block of West Chicago in the wee hours of the morning. In both instances, the suspects fled the scene on foot.
Four days before Memorial Day Weekend rolled around, Mayor Lori Lightfoot expressed optimism that her city would be ready for a potential uptick in gun violence in the coming days. But unfortunately, the public safety strategy that she presented to the public with the Chicago Police Department did not go according to plan. In response, the Chicago PD has indicated that they may implement 12-hour tours of duty in the future.
Since the year 2018 more mass shootings have taken place in Chicago than in any other U.S. city. So, as the Chicago PD's war against gun violence continues, be sure to keep it locked for the latest news.
