Rapper Yak Gotti was denied bond during a hearing on Thursday (June 2), and it was revealed that he was caught using another inmate's code to use the phone in jail. Prosecutors allege that Yak Gotti did this so that he could sneak a cellphone into the jail, which was later confiscated.
Journalist George Chidi, who detailed the case recently with VladTV, spoke about the court hearing via Twitter, writing, "Yak Gotti has been on a stolen cell phone in jail, trying to get people outside to destroy a cache of other burner cells. The cops got to those phones before Gotti's contact could." He added, "A lot of talk about how Yak Gotti snitched. It's not quite that simple. He plead guilty when he and YSL Duke were caught with rifles a few years ago as they were on the way to a retaliation hit after a fight at Magic City."
Chidi later clarified that a "stolen" cellphone in jail is "an illegally possessed cell phone at the jail, one obtained by another inmate."
During Yak Gotti's hearing, his attorney, Jay Abt, argued that the prosecution was wrong for using his lyrics in the case. Abt stated, "What the government is doing here, in this case, is sending a message to the music industry and the entertainment industry that is going to have a massive chilling effect. It’s a hub in the United States for the music industry and the entertainment industry. And it’s created a tremendous amount of jobs and income and opportunities for young inner-city youth. I would argue to this court that it actually prevented a lot of crime. And what the message that the district attorney’s office is sending to our community into our country is that you better not come to Atlanta and make rap videos because we’re going to use those against you in court."
