Dwyane Wade recently appeared at the TIME 100 Summit where he spoke out against the increasingly hostile social and legal environment transgender people find themselves occupying, including his 15-year-old trans daughter Zaya.
Wade spoke specifically about how the recent legislative decisions have made him fearful for Zaya's well-being. “As sad as it is, as blessed as my daughter is to have parents who can support her, I’m still afraid every moment she leaves the house, and not just because of gun violence but because of the way that people perceive her in this world,” he explained.
The future basketball Hall of Famer's remarks come on the heels of many states implementing anti-trans sports measures, most recently in Louisiana with their Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. Other states that have proposed and passed similar legislation include: Arizona, Iowa, Kentucky, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Eight states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia) saw these law pass last year.
