After all the rumors, potential trade scenarios, and talks about what a Kyrie move from Brooklyn would spell for Kevin Durant, the Nets are bringing back Irving who is picking up his $36.5 million player option to remain with the team through next season.
This kicks the can down the road for one more season as it gives Irving and the Nets another year to come to an agreement on a long-term deal or if that is unable to happen Irving can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season. Trading Kyrie at some point this season is also an option for the Nets if a favorable deal becomes available.
In light of the announcement, Irving reportedly stated: “Normal people keep the world going, but those who dare to be different lead us into tomorrow. I’ve made my decision to opt in. See you in the fall. A11even.”
