Three days after voting against legislation that supports gay marriage with the "Respect for Marriage Act," Representative Glenn Thompson (R-PA) crossed his own moral and political lines in lieu of attending his son's marriage to another man. This controversial decision has landed the politician in hot water with fellow Republicans. Since then, a firestorm of scathing tweets from various political figureheads have been circulating on Twitter, rendering Rep. Thompson as the primary target of ridicule.
"GOP family values: @CongressmanGT votes against protecting marriage equality and then goes to his gay son's wedding," wrote writer Steve Silberman. "Rep. Glenn Thompson's son deserves a better father."
Another writer named Michael J. Stern shared his disdain for Rep. Glenn Thompson on Twitter.
"Glenn Thompson, (@CongressmanGT), attended gay son’s wedding after opposing protections for same-sex marriage," wrote Stern. "What a disgusting waste of space. And, can you imagine the shame of his son?"
Meanwhile, Holly Figueroa O'Reilly, a Democrat and writer with the Washington Post, offered up her opinion of Thompson's actions in a more joking manner.
"Glenn Thompson, GOP (duh) lawmaker attended his gay son's wedding 3 days after voting against same-sex marriage bill I'd say something about hypocrisy but I don't like to repeat myself."
Rep. Glenn Thompson's decision to attend his son's wedding doesn't that he supports the act itself, it just means that he loves his son, regardless. The politician from Pennsylvania has yet to respond to the bevy of critical tweets that he's received because of his decision.
