According to reports, Charter Cable Communications (Spectrum Cable) has been ordered to pay over $7 billion in damages to a Texas family for the murder of a woman by a repairman.
The company was found liable for the death of 83-year-old Betty Thomas who was robbed and murdered by cable repairman Roy Holden Jr.
Holden pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison back in April 2021.
Hamilton Wingo, who represented the family in this case said:
“This was a shocking breach of faith by a company that sends workers inside millions of homes every year, [...] The jury in this case was thoughtful and attentive to the evidence. This verdict justly reflects the extensive evidence regarding the nature of the harm caused by Charter Spectrum’s gross negligence and reckless misconduct. For the safety of the American public, we can only hope that Charter Spectrum and its shareholders are listening.”
In a statement earlier this week, Charter spokesman Rich Ruggiero said the company would appeal the verdict: “The law in Texas and the facts presented at trial clearly show this crime was not foreseeable — and the plaintiffs’ claims of wrongdoing by Charter are categorically false.”
