Travis McMichael, the 36-year-old man who fatally shot unarmed jogger Ahmaud Arbery was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years for federal hate crime charges.

The judge in the case—Lisa Godbey Wood went on to say McMichael is required to serve his sentence in state prison, as opposed to federal prison which was requested by his attorney. Judge Wood said the killer received a fair trial, “the kind of trial that Ahmaud Arbery did not receive before he was shot and killed.” She continued saying “You killed a man on Feb. 23, 2020. The events depicted in the video, they are seared in the annals of this court and and no doubt in your mind forever.”

News of this comes after McMichael’s attorney requested that the man serve in federal prison after receiving “hundreds of threats,” which made the man fear he would be killed in state custody.
