Two years ago, Zaya Wade "came out" and revealed her genre identity to the public. Shortly thereafter, her father, Dwyane Wade, appeared on The Ellen Show to, among other things, show his support for his daughter and explain the thought process behind his decision. Today, the three-time NBA champion has become an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, with his primary focus being on the trans community. Earlier this year, the all-time leading scorer for the Miami Heat spoke at the Time100 summit about trans rights to convince lawmakers to loosen their grip on the restrictions that trans females are now faced with in competitive sports, and now he's appealing for a judge in Los Angeles County to legally recognize his daughter's gender change and name change from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade. Because Zaya (15) is still a minor, her father had to file the name/gender change petition on her behalf. According to reports, there's a section of the paperwork that specifically asks for a reason behind the request. Dwyane reportedly wrote, "To confirm gender identity," in that section. Now, the Wade family must wait as the decision lies in the hands of the judge.
