Part 1: Former Russian Spy Jack Barsky on How He was Approached to Join the KGB
--------
In this clip, Jack Barsky spoke about living in Queens with his wife and kids when the KGB felt that his cover was blown as a spy, which he said was evident when he saw the “danger signal.” Jack explained that he knew he had to flee the country, which worried him because he had an 18-month-old daughter that he knew he had to leave. However, Jack was also worried about the FBI and KBG coming after him, and he added that the decision was made when he ignored the signal and went to work. A few days later, he got a morse code message from the KGB explaining that they felt like the FBI was on his case. Jack stated that he stalled because he was trying to figure out how to support his daughter, and the KGB made an unprecedented move of sending an agent to speak to him. Jack then revealed that he made the decision to stay, and he told his handler that he was HIV positive, which was scary at the time. Jack then revealed that the KGB went to his other wife in Germany to tell her that he was dead, and he revealed that his mother didn’t know his whereabouts until her death.
Moving along, Jack Barsky spoke about the Berlin Wall coming down in 1989, and the USSR fell two years later in 1991. In 1992, a KGB defector Vasili Mitrokhin, who ousted him and where he was staying in the U.S., led the FBI to come after him. In 1996, the FBI started investigating Jack, and he explained what the FBI was looking for while watching him. Jack then explained that he confessed his past as a KGB agent to his wife while he was being surveilled by the FBI. After being pulled over in 1997, Jack was taken in by the FBI, which you can hear more about above.
