Criminal activity during Labor Day weekend in Chicago typically produces eye-popping numbers in terms of gun-related incidents. This year was no exception as 55 people were victims of a shooting in the city. Through the midst of all the gun violence, there was a significant gang-related drug bust that resulted in the arrest of 25 people at the hands of the Chicago Police Department.
According to reports, the CPD launched a city-wide probe into multiple drug markets located in Little Village, Pilsen and Austin. These undercover investigations, date back about one year and they became known throughout law enforcement agencies as “Operation Shattered Forks," “Operation Casa de Diablo” and “Operation Double Stack.” The adaptive police work enabled local authorities to recover more than $80,000 worth of heroin, over $100,000 worth of cocaine, and roughly $130,000 in cash, upon making the highly publicized gang-related arrests.
However, much to the chagrin of the CPD, 22 of the arrestees were released from police custody with bond shortly thereafter, which practically rendered their hard work redundant in the eyes of the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.
“These are dangerous people, and it took our officers doing dangerous work,” said David Brown. “Risking their lives for someone that the judges didn’t see as a danger to the community — and we differ in that opinion.”
