A short while ago, a 19-year-old from Brazil had sex with two different men on the same night. That's an impression that is not far from the ordinary, but the results that followed were quite unusual from a scientific standpoint. The teenager was inadvertently impregnated by both of the men that she slept with, thus making her the future parent of a pair of twins who were 'half-siblings.' When the mother-to-be found out that her twins were fathered by two different men, she was taken aback and understandably so.
"I was surprised by the results. I didn't know this could happen. They are very similar," the woman said.
The twins' birth, several months later, would go on to be considered a scientific rarity. According to studies, the term for occurrences such as these is called "heteropaternal superfecundation," which only occurs about 2.4% of the time that mothers give birth to a set of twins. This happens when a woman's body releases multiple eggs in a single cycle, and they are fertilized by two different men within a very short timeframe.
The teen mom's physician, Dr. Túlio Jorge Franco, recently described the twins' birth as a scenario that only has a "one in a million" chance of unfolding.
"It is possible to happen when two eggs from the same mother are fertilized by different men," Franco explained. "The babies share the mother's genetic material, but they grow in different placentas."
