‘Friends’ star Matthew Perry recently spoke about his battle with addiction and told the New York Times, “I’ve probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober.”

The revelation came via an interview about his memoir which is set to release soon, which details a near-death experience. Perry referred to himself as a “drug addict” and noted that he almost died at 49. The actor said he realized he spent over half of his life in sober living facilities or treatment centers.

Perry highlighted different substances he was addicted to, referencing oxycontin, Xanax, Vicodin, and vodka. “I would fake back injuries. I would fake migraine headaches. I had eight doctors going at the same time. I would wake up and have to get 55 Vicodin that day and figure out how to do it,” said Perry. The actor noted he wasn’t taking the drugs to party but to just be. He said, “I certainly wasn’t a partyer; I just wanted to sit on my couch, take five Vicodin and watch a movie. That was heaven for me. It no longer is.”
