Two years ago, a Guatemalan American freshman named Marvin Garcia Meda joined J5, the heralded drum team at Jackson State University--a historically Black university in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi. Thus, making him the first-ever Latino head drum major in 'Sonic Boom of the South.' His high school music teacher, Carlton Williams, is a JSU alum, and he is said to be one of the first faculty members to notice Marvin's exceptional musicality.

Since enrolling at JSU, Marvin has grown in popularity, and he's become an integral part of his school's marching band,  even garnering a 'follow' on Instagram from the most popular person on the JSU campus, Coach Deion Sanders. Last month 'Sonic Boom of the South' was featured on Good Morning America.

The JSU student from the class of 2023 recently went viral with his bandmates for a live performance during the Boombox classic.

Jesus Mata, the first Latino drum major at an HBCU, enrolled at Prairie View A&M University a few years before Marvin arrived at Jackson State University.
