New Mexico State basketball player Mike Peake was involved in a shootout on the rival school University of New Mexico's campus on Nov. 19 after defending himself from an alleged set-up.

According to police, the 21-year-old forward was "lured" to the campus by a 17-year-old female and several male UNM students, who allegedly planned on retaliating over a previous incident that happened at an October football game between NMSU and UNM.

Less than a month later, video footage of the incident was released and shows Peake arriving on UNM's campus around 3 AM. The footage shows Peake talking to someone right outside of a campus building before three men sneak up on him. While one of the men, who the authorities identified as 19-year-old Brandon Travis, points a gun at him, another man strikes Peake in the leg with a bat.

As Peake attempts to flee from the attack, he starts reaching for his gun, which causes two of the men to give up the chase. However, as Peake is running away, he starts exchanging gunfire with Travis before the 19-year-old is fatally struck.

Investigators say Peake was also shot during the exchange but has undergone multiple surgeries and is expected to recover. He is currently serving an indefinite suspension from NMSU's basketball team over the deadly altercation.

Two UNM students have been arrested and charged for the incident. The investigation is still ongoing.
