DJ Vlad argues that most labels are going to lose money on the new artists that they sign. DJ Akademiks agrees and provides more context by stating that about one out of every ten artists that are signed actually succeed. From there, he breaks down the importance of owning your own publishing rights before DJ Vlad indicates that his point is only applicable if the artist makes good music. As the discussion moves along, Akademiks makes an interesting point that the only leverage that a top-notch artist like Kendrick Lamar has is to not drop new music in order to put pressure on his record label.
