Shortly after Lionel Messi led the Argentina National Football team to its third-ever World Cup championship, Adidas announced that they had sold out of the team captain's jersey worldwide. Since then, independent sellers have been selling Messi jerseys online for about $500. Although there are plenty of Pelé loyalists out there who still believe that the three-time World Cup winner (and FIFA World Cup Player of the Century) is the G.O.A.T., the consensus view is that Messi has usurped the crown. His heroics in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar won him the golden ball (an award given to the best player of the tournament), and it seemed to validate his legacy in the "G.O.A.T. Debate" with Pelé and Diego Maradona.
According to reports, the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic is strongly contemplating the idea of commemorating the country's first World Cup Championship in nearly 36 years by placing Messi's face on the 1000-peso bill.
