In late September, an elderly woman named Martha Louis Menefield was summoned to appear in court for failing to pay her trash bill all Summer long. Local authorities claim called Martha numerous times before sending her a citation for $77.80 in an effort to collect the money in lieu of a court date. Nonetheless, the court date came and went, and Martha was a no-show. Therefore, on November 27th, an officer from the Valley Police Department ascended upon Martha's home in Valley, Alabama, with handcuffs and an explanation as to why he was about to haul her off to jail.
"[Are] you Martha Menefiled?" Aked the officer after ringing Martha's doorbell.
"I am," she replied with a surprised look on her face.
The officer then presented Marta with a warrant before talking about her only other option.
"So, you're gonna handcuff me and take me away?" Asked the Grandmother.
"Yes ma'am, I got to," replied the officer.
"So what would I have to pay?" Asked Martha.
"It'll be $255...if not I have to take you to the county jail," stated the officer.
"Oh Lord!" Replied Martha
From there, the officer proceeded with the arrest by handcuffing Martha,
"You outta be ashamed of yourself, arresting an 83-year-old woman," said Martha as the officer pulled out his handcuffs.
"I am so sorry, but the law is the law," the officer responded.
Elsewhere in the video, Martha could be heard complaining about the weight of the handcuffs. She even asked the question, “How would you feel if they came and arrested your grandmama?” To which neither of the officers replied.
Martha's arrest sparked citywide outrage as many residents from the area flooded the city's Facebook page with complaints about arresting an elderly woman over a $77 trash bill.
The story has even garnered national attention from the media as well.
