Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who was widely known as the soccer superstar and legend Pelé, has passed away at the age of 82.

According to NPR, Pelé had been admitted to a hospital in São Paulo last month, as he was battling complications from colon cancer. Kely Nascimento, Pelé's daughter, paid tribute on Instagram, writing, "Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace."

Pelé was a legend in the soccer world, as he played in four World Cups and is the only soccer player to win three. He is famous for his quote "I was born to play football, just like Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint."

Following his soccer career, Pelé became Brazil's Extraordinary Minister for Sport, as well as an ambassador for UNESCO and the United Nations.
