Among the biggest questions that sports fans are pondering going into a new year is whether or not they will ever get to see a boxing match between Gervonta "Tank" Davis (27-0) and Ryan Garcia (23-0) while both fighters are still in their prime or will this dream bout go the way of Mayweather-Pacquiao. According to reports, the two lightweight fighters have created the framework for a potential showdown in Las Vegas in April, but nothing has been made official yet. For now, Tank is focusing on his upcoming title defense against Hector Luis Garcia on January 7th. In contrast, Ryan appears to have his sights set solely on Tank as his first fight of 2023. The Golden Boy Promotions signee is 5'11, while Tank stands at 5'6. During a recent appearance on Throwing Bones with Draymond Green, the 24-year-old stated that part of the reason why the super fight hasn't happened yet is that Tank has hesitancy about being the smaller fighter...and he's simply better.
"What's stopping you and Tank from fighting?" Asked Draymond. "As a boxing fan, I want to see it. I feel like, as a boxing fan, for me it took us way too long to see the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight...So, when I'm watching this, you and Tank haven't fought yet, [and] Errol Spence and Terrance Crawford haven't fought yet...As a fan of the sport, I want to see that. My question is, what's stopping you from fighting?"
"Right now, we're actually in talks to fight," replied Ryan. "What's [stopping us]? The first problem, when it first started [during] the recent negotiations, is I'm a big guy. I'm bigger than Tank. So, naturally, I gotta move away from 135 [pounds], I was at 132 in the amateurs since I was like 15 [and 14] years old. I'm 24 now. So, I was like, 'I'm not moving back down to 135, and I know Tank has already fought at 140. He fought a guy named Mario Barrios (27-2). Now, because he felt he could beat Mario, he went up to 140. [It's like he's saying] 'I'm not gonna go up to 140,' because he knows it's a much more difficult fight than the guy he's talking about. So, right there shows me that he's not as confident or he's looking for an edge...He may not be as confident to fight me at 140 than to fight another guy at 140. That don't make sense to me. Just know that when I do fight him, it's gonna look a lot easier than everybody may see. It's a delusion. Ya'll see a delusion. I see right through it; it's gonna be easy. Not because he's not a great fighter, but because I'm that much more great, and it's just gonna have to be shown. Just don't bet your money on Tank! You'll lose the whole bank!"
