According to reports, a Florida septuagenarian is behind bars without bail after being accused of murdering her terminally ill husband as he lay in a hospital bed.
Ellen Gilland, 76, was charged with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after fatally shooting her husband at AdventHealth Hospital in Daytona Beach.
According to Gilland, her husband, 77, told her to "end it" if his condition worsened.
“Initially, I think the plan was a murder-suicide so she killed him and then she was going to turn the gun on herself but decided she couldn’t go through with it,” said Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari E. Young. Gilland also refused to turn herself into police after the 11:30AM shooting but finally surrendered around 3PM local time.
“This was somewhat of a logistical nightmare, which is why again I’m very, very proud of my team,” Young added. “Pretty much all the patients on that floor are on ventilators so they didn’t have the room to evacuate that entire floor, so they evacuated the rooms where it was most important to get them out of the way.”
