According to studies, thousands of women go missing in the country of Mexico every year, never to be seen or heard from again. In 2015, the National Citizen Femicide Observatory (OCNF) reported that nearly six women were targeted and murdered daily in the country. Seven years later, on Mother's Day of 2022, several female protesters took to the streets of Mexico City to call for government officials' accountability regarding the glaring number of lives lost. Last Tuesday, the problematic conditions for women reached a new level of concern when a man named Christopher Gerardo Rodríguez managed to kill his wife, Alondra Franco (21), and his mother-in-law Liliana Tover (45), at a police station in the city of Poncitlán (Jalisco, Mexico) during business hours. Ironically enough, the women arrived at the police station specifically to report him for domestic violence. Unfortunately for Alondra and Liliana, Christopher anticipated their move and met outside the police station. Just as the women entered the police station, Christopher stepped out of a vehicle and gunned them down. Liliana died instantly, while Alondra passed away the following day.
“The man acted too fast for us to react,” said Luis Joaquín Méndez, the chief prosecutor of the western state of Jalisco. “The police station was almost empty, and there were no officers around as they all were out in the field."
After the shooting, Christopher abandoned his car in the middle of the street and made a run for it. He was captured on Wednesday.
