Previously, it was revealed that five former Memphis police officers—Justin Smith, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, and Desmond Mills Jr., were charged with second-degree murder in the Tyre Nichols beating death. Now, all five of those former officers have pleaded not guilty.

A court date of May 1, 2023, was set for the former cops, and since then, the mother, Nichols—RowVaughn Wells, has spoken about the new information. “This is the beginning of the process. I want every one of those police officers to look me in the face. They did not do that today,” said Wells while speaking to the press after the court hearing this past Friday.

According to the city’s legal chief officer, seven more Memphis police officers are set to be issued “statement of charges” for policy violations in the incident.
