On Wednesday, Eric Holder (33) was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison for the fatal on-camera shooting of Ermias Asghedom, the West Coast rapper better known as Nipsey Hussle. The highly publicized incident occurred near the storefront of Nipsey's place of business, The Marathon Clothing Store, in South Los Angeles on March 31, 2019.
The ruling was handed down by Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke after Holder's defense attorney, Aaron Jansen, delayed the process with two appeals based on the contention that his client suffered from mental health deficiencies. Prosecutors involved in the legal proceedings opposed Jansen's stance, indicating that Holder's murderous actions were intentional.
The tragic incident between fellow members of the Rolling 60s Crips resulted in Holder being indicted four years ago and subsequently convicted of 1st-degree murder by a Los Angeles jury. Details of Holder's sentence include 25 years at a state prison for the aforementioned killing, along with 25 extra years due to the fact that the murder was carried out with a firearm. The punishment contains an additional ten years behind bars for shooting two of Nipsey's associates during the altercation.
During the sentencing hearing, Nipsey's close friend, Herman "Cowboy" Douglas, spoke about the economic devastation that the loss of Nispey has had on the pulse of their neighborhood in the Crenshaw District.
“Our community right now, we lost everything we worked for," Douglas said. "Thousands of jobs we don’t have no more. Homies don’t have nothing to do. They backsliding, they [are] robbing people now...All our stores are closed down. The whole community relied on Nip.”
Prior to the sentencing, Eric Holder Jr. was awaiting trial at the Los Angeles County Jail, where he was physically assaulted with a razor during the Summer.
