Part 1: Sickamore on How He Became an A&R, Starting a Record Label with Just Blaze

--------

In this clip, Sickamore spoke about how he landed at Def Jam, where he worked with artists such as Lil Durk, Lil Reese, and YG. Sickamore detailed how YG’s debut album, My Krazy Life, came to be and why it was difficult finishing the project in YG’s hometown of Los Angeles. Sickamore said things didn’t fully come together until they took a 2-month recording retreat to Atlanta, where Jeezy came on board to EP the project and helped flesh out the album’s title. Later, Saigon asked Sickamore whether he’d be apprehensive about signing a rapper who’s a known gang member in today’s hip-hop climate. Sickamore said he would and explained how labels have failed the artists by not giving them proper structure as they unload millions onto them. Sickamore pointed out how the unfortunate rate of death and incarceration among rappers can be explained by the negligence on the part of the labels.

Saigon transitioned to speaking about YG’s “My N***a” going 5X Platinum and “My Krazy Life” leaking while they were promoting the album at SXSW. Sickamore revealed he was crying tears of joy from the response, despite the album leaking, and he showed love to DJ Mustard, YG, and Jeezy for giving him a co-executive producer credit on “My N***a.” Moving along, Sickamore spoke about YG wanting Nicki Minaj on the “My N***a” remix, which she didn’t charge for, and Sickamore added that Nicki called to congratulate him on his success. From there, Saigon asked Sickamore about YG doing the “F*** Donald Trump” song and tour, which Sickamore said led to them being flagged by the FBI for a threat. Sickamore added that he was proud when he heard the song during the protest marches, and Saigon went on to ask Sickamore about YG’s beef with Drakeo The Ruler.
