Part 1: Roland Martin on Growing Up in One of the First Communities for Black People in Texas

In this clip, Shawn Prez started off speaking to Roland Martin about his family encouraging debates within their family, even with the kids, which Shawn pointed out isn’t typical for Black families. Roland explained that the conversations were about religion, and he added that his maternal grandfather would debate with the priests at their church. Roland then added that his grandfather was gifted with healing and prophecy, and he went on to share a story about his experiences with his grandfather. Moving along, Roland spoke about his teacher telling him that no one can serve as president for more than two terms or eight years. Roland then spoke about debating his teacher on the topic, using JFK’s assassination and Lyndon B. Johnson assuming the presidency as an example. Roland added that he carried through with the debate on a test, and he went on to speak about how he continued to debate throughout his life. From there, Roland explained that he couldn’t let people share false information, which he believes is a big problem today.
