For several decades, the legendary Compton Swap Meet (Compton Fashion Center) was described by locals as the mecca for self-made vendors and the city's most notable gangs. Located at an old Sears building on 2100 N. Long Beach Blvd., the indoor flea market essentially became a seminal landmark for the West Coast rap community as multiple iconic emcees from the genre, such as 2Pac and Kendrick Lamar shot music videos on the premise. Ultimatley, the Compton Swap Meet was shut down after 32 years of transforming several hardworking small businesses started by migrants.

There are many tales about violent acts that occurred at the Compton Swap Meet. A man with a severely battered face recently went viral after claiming he had been jumped by a rival gang at the Compton Swap Meet. The subject, who seemingly took to IG live immediately following the assault, became the topic of punchlines and jokes as many commentators questioned why he would call for help from his friends instead of a first responder to tend to his noticeable injuries.
