In 2021, it was reported that a cinematographer named Halyna Hutchens was killed while on the set of the independent film ‘Rust’ after being accidentally struck by a bullet from Alec Baldwin’s prop gun. It was also noted that director Joel Souza was wounded as a result of the tragic incident. Criminal charges were filed against Baldwin, with the actor once facing two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Now, charges against Baldwin have been dropped.
Lawyers for Baldwin—Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas issued a statement, saying “We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident.” Despite the charges being dropped, prosecutors in New Mexico say the actor is not in the clear, as new information in relation to the shooting was presented, and that they couldn’t investigate within legal time constraints ahead of a May 3 preliminary hearing.
Special prosecutors Jason Lewis and Kari Morrissey went on to say “We therefore will be dismissing the involuntary manslaughter charges against Mr. Baldwin to conduct further investigation. This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled. Our follow-up investigation will remain active and ongoing.” Stay tuned for more updates.
