Amid Saturday night's highly anticipated lightweight boxing match billed as "It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This" between Gervonta "Tank" Davis (27-0) and Ryan Garcia (23-1) earned approximately 1,250,000 buys Pay-Per-View buys. In the end, Davis stopped the challenger in the 7th round with a vicious punch to the liver, after having landed 34% of his punches compared to the 24% that Garcia landed. Shortly after the bout, Ryan Garcia was slammed by rapper Sadboy Loco and other Twitter users of Mexican descent by questioning the fighter's pride as a Mexican.
"@RyanGarcia Nos Awaits...A Pay isn't worth our pride. When Mexicans were on top you do this," Sadboy Loko Tweeted.
Other Twitter users appeared to share in that sentiment as "We don't claim Ryan Garcia," suddenly began to trend on the social media platform. However, Ryan also has a large number of supporters in the boxing world, on social media, and within his own community. During the post-fight press conference with Showtime, the 24-year-old was asked by a reporter to reflect back on the amount of fanfare he received from his community during the fight against Gervonta Davis at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"You are really proud of your Mexican blood," the reporter said. "Tonight, the arena, at some point, [sounded] like Mexico. What can you tell to the Mexican fans that [were] yelling and giving you their support?"
"Honestly, at that moment, I felt so proud, man, I never felt that in a fight before [with all of them] screaming 'Mexico!' Honestly, it warmed my heart, and I appreciate all them that came and [supported me]," Garcia said. I thank you guys from the bottom of my heart, I tried my best as a Mexican warrior, and I tried to make you guys proud, and I thank you guys for supporting me in the fight...I appreciate you."
Although Garcia lost the fight, he did tease the possibility of a rematch with Gervonta Davis, somewhere down the line with a post on Twitter.
