It's no secret that Dr. Dre's debut studio album, The Chronic, is widely regarded as a timeless classic in the hip-hop community. However, DJ Clark Kent, a renowned figure in the music industry, recently shared his perspective on why he believes the album falls short of the "classic" status.
During a sit-down with Angie Martinez, Clark Kent broke down his opinion on what makes a classic album and listed albums such as Doggystyle, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die, and Life After Death. He also stated Doggystyle was a better album than its Death Row predecessor, The Chronic.
"I can't even put The Chronic before I put [Doggystyle]," he said. "Snoop Dogg's album is better than The Chronic, anyways – it definitely is."
Clark Kent added that in order for an album to be considered a classic, the album must have no songs that can be skipped. Not only did he say he could skip songs on The Chronic, but singled out the artist that causes him to press the skip button on the classic release.
"You have to have great songs that make [a classic] happen," Kent added. "If you don't – if you got one song that doesn't hit properly, you done took yourself out of the classic [thing]. Because if you could, you ain't got a classic. That's why, I won't say The Chronic is a classic because I could skip RBX."
After his remarks caused a stir, DJ Clark Kent released a follow-up statement on Twitter, which read, "Note: Having an opinion, that may not be popular, doesn't make you a hater. Also doesn't make you bias. It makes you human. Everyone has preferences. I like what I like. You like what you like. I respect everyone's opinions as their own. I will never expect anybody to be in total agreement with me."
It's important to note that RBX was also featured on the Doggystyle album.
