A few decades before the WWE's "Attitude Era" and the famed "Ruthless Aggression Era" during the late 1990s and early 2000s, the "Golden Era" of the 1980s spearheaded Vince McMahon's pro wrestling promotion into the mainstream. Led by in-ring protagonists such as Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant, the WWE (formerly known as the WWF) endeared itself to a youthful audience with a wholesome brand of entertainment that included a weekly morning show called WWF All American Wrestling, an assortment of merchandise such as "Wrestling Buddies" and a Saturday morning cartoon called Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling. The latter featured one of the company's greatest on-camera villains, The Iron Sheik.
Known for a finishing move called the "Cobra Clutch," The Iron Sheik became the first Iranian-born World Heavyweight Champion before an unknown wrestler at the time, named Hulk Hogan, ended his title reign in 1984. Over the years, the iconic "heel" has become more famous for his theatrical takes during Q&A sessions, including a famous interview where accused Hulk Hogan of being homosexual without proof. His unapologetic commentary regarding fellow celebrities via his Twitter handle has also attracted a fair amount of attention.
On social media, the 81-year-old retiree often refers to people he disapproves of as a "Jabroni." During his heyday as an active wrestler on the WWE roster, The Iron Sheik blurted out the word regularly in the presence of his old friend, Rocky "Soul Man" Johnson, and his impressionable kid, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Although The Rock would go on to make the word "Jabroni" a famous part of his on-camera act, his hit sitcom on NBC, Young Rock, humorously pays homage to The Iron Sheik by showing how the slogan originated with him during his childhood.
Shortly after Ja Morant's latest "gun flashing" incident went viral, many celebrities, from Shannon Sharpe, Stephen A. Smith, Chris Broussard, and Fat Joe, shared their thoughts on the matter with insightful sternness and a little hope for his future. However, when The Iron Sheik caught wind of trending footage, his message for Ja Morant was slightly less nurturing.
"JA BRONI MORANT," The Iron Sheik wrote.
