Carmelo Anthony recently released a message via video announcing his retirement from the NBA after 19 years in the league.
Anthony spent one year in college at Syracuse University and led the team to gain an NCAA championship. Via a video montage the storied future NBA Hall of Famer posted on social media, he said, “Now the time has come for me to say goodbye ... to the game that gave me purpose and pride.”
Carmelo didn’t play in the NBA this season but made his mark as the 9th leading scorer in the history of the NBA. During his 19 seasons in the league, Melo averaged 22.5 points per game with the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, and New York Knicks.
Anthony’s journey in basketball also found him playing in the Olympics, playing 31 games in four appearances. According to ESPN, this is the most appearances out of any U.S. men’s player ever. While speaking on his legacy, Melo said, “It's not my feats on the court that come to mind, all the awards or praise. Because my story has always been more than basketball. My legacy, my son ... I will forever continue through you. The time has come for you to carry this torch.” Watch above.
