The Crenshaw community of South Los Angeles is mourning the tragic death of a High School basketball standout named Quincy Reese Jr. According to reports, the 16-year-old was gunned down in a drive-by-shooting on Saturday night, around 11:40 pm after being dropped off at a nightclub called 77 Lounge to attend someone's birthday with his teammates.
"I feel like my world's been torn upside down," said Reese's father, Quincy Reese Sr. "I felt comfortable with the people I know is gonna protect him...."He had an outstanding personality, and [his] grades were A-1...He already did what he was supposed to do, which made sure that grades came first."
In an interview with Fox 11, Quincy's best friend, Chris Halton, recapped the sad incident by revealing that bullets hit Quincy after the initial gunfire caused the crowd to run for cover. Halton did not notice that Quincy had been shot until he turned around after running away from the 77 Lounge. So far, there are conflicting reports about the motivation behind the shooting. But Halton stated that Quincy was not the shooter's target claiming, "They were just trigger happy."
An investigation by the LAPD is ongoing, as the incident's perpetrators remain at large. According to his basketball coach, Ed Waters, Quincy Reese Jr. had interest from nearly 50 colleges. With a 3.4 GPA, Quincy was described by teachers at Crenshaw High as a good student. In addition to playing basketball, he played baseball and ran cross-country.
