Last Spring, Sony-Marvel revealed that Bad Bunny would star in the first-ever Latino-led film of their cinematic universe, El Muerto. In the comic books, El Muerto is the son of a luchador wrestler in Mexico. Bad Bunny's praiseworthy performance as an actor in Narcos: Mexico and as an in-ring performer at WWE's pay-per-view event in Puerto Rico in May (2023 Backlash) made him a fitting casting choice for such pivotal production with a considerably high budget.
The storyline of the superpowered anti-hero is interwoven within the intricate Spider-Man premise, and it was slated to be released in January 2024. However, on Wednesday, Sony announced that the live-action movie had been removed from their upcoming release schedule. According to reports, Sony brought Jonas Cuarón (Gravity) into the fold to direct El Muerto back in October, but a combination of Bad Bunny's world tour and the Hollywood writer's strike prompted the world-renowned entertainment conglomerate to delay the film without committing to a new date.
For now, Sony will refocus their sights on the upcoming release of two other Spider-Man spin-offs, Kraven the Hunter (Starring Aaron Taylor-Johson) and Madame Web (starring Dakota Johnson). The movies are expected to hit theaters in October 2023 and February 2024.
