On June 22nd, the Memphis Grizzlies acquired nine-year veteran Marcus Smart in an effort to shore up their defense and provide the team's locker room with some much-needed leadership. Shortly after the 2023 NBA free agency period began, the Grizzlies signed Derrick Rose to a two-year deal, pairing the 2011 MVP with a young superstar many pundits have compared him to in recent years. With Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose in the fold, the Memphis Grizzlies appear to be in a better position to provide Ja Morant with structure and solid mentorship from proven winners, once he returns to the court after serving his 25-game suspension. In the wake of the team's recent acquisitions, fans took to Twitter and immediately started referring to Ja Morant and Derrick Rose as Guns N' Roses—a humorous nod to the popular Los Angeles-based hard rock band of the late 1980s. The nickname is already gaining steam as several sports outlets have shared the news on their platforms.
