Every year in Chicago, the city's patrons witness a surge in the death toll during the 4th of July weekend. Last year, 57 Chicagoans were shot, and nine victims did not survive their wounds. Although the numbers have dropped this year, the stats thus far indicate that 33 Chicagoans have been shot, and five have been pronounced dead. Last month, Chicago's new Mayor, Brandon Johnson, addressed the bloody stretch in his city during Memorial Day weekend, when 53 Chicagoans were shot and 11 died. Johnson recently joined other Mayors at the U.S. Conference of Mayors to discuss how to combat gun violence nationwide.
