An arrest warrant has been issued for Ja Morant's best friend, Davonte Pack, over an alleged assault at a pick-up game at Morant's Tennessee home last year.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office issued the warrant on Monday (July 10) for 27-year-old Pack, who is wanted for misdemeanor assault-bodily harm for allegedly punching a-then-17-year-old Joshua Holloway last July 26.
The D.A.'s office issued a statement, which reads, "The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office obtained a warrant for the arrest of Davonte Pack, who has been charged with simple assault in relation to the July 2022 altercation involving Mr. Pack, Memphis Grizzlies basketball player Ja Morant, and a juvenile basketball player at Mr. Morant’s residence in Eads."
The Washington Post recently posted transcripts of Pack's deposition, where he admitted that he could have "avoid[ed] the conflict with Holloway over an aggressively checked ball." Pack also admitted that he went into "fight mode" with Holloway after the teen hit Morant with a ball, which led to the altercation in which he and Morant are accused of punching Holloway.
Morant and Pack are both involved in a civil lawsuit filed by Holloway's family over the incident. In October 2022, prosecutors declined to charge Morant, claiming there was "not sufficient admissible evidence" to charge him, but they didn't address potential charges against Pack.
In a hearing on Monday (July 11) for the civil suit, an attorney for Morant and Pack claimed Morant "acted in self-defense" after Holloway "intentionally struck him in the face with a basketball." On Wednesday, a judge is set to rule on Morant's motion to dismiss Holloway's civil lawsuit.
