Over the years, Fat Joe has seemingly slimmed down, shifting away from the name that powers his brand. Recently, Fat Joe opened up more about his journey with weight loss and depression, revealing his struggles during the conversation.

Fat Joe noted seeing Big Pun at his funeral made him examine his weight, saying, “I went to his funeral, and I felt like Ebenezer Scrooge. Like, I seen me.” From there, he told himself he had to lose weight or else. Joe then noted Pun’s death sent him into a deep depression, calling it “the most complex Rubik’s Cube you could ever, ever, ever, ever try to figure out.”

Joe then described how family, specifically his mother, brings him joy and serves as a happy place when he begins to feel unhappy or feels depression looming. While speaking about his weight, Joe compared his journey to artist Lizzo, saying, “She’s embracing her beauty, saying, ‘I’m a big girl, and I’m proud of it. All you big girls could rock out with me.’ I used to do that, too.” Joe noted he has no plans to change his rap and brand name, despite becoming more health-conscious.
