In March, officials from U.S. Mint announced that Celia Cruz, the legendary Cuban-born salsa singer who relocated to the United States in the early 1960s, would be featured on American currency, thus making her the first Afro-Latina to be recognized in such a manner. The prestigious honor is a part of the 2024 American Women Quarters Program. She was one of five honorees, along with Zitkala-Ša, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Pauli Murray, and Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. In addition to being featured in American currency, other notable achievements attributed to Celia Cruz are a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, three Grammy Awards, four Latin Grammy Awards, a President's National Medal of Arts, and numerous streets named after her (such as Celia Cruz Square and Celia Cruz Way).
Over the weekend, U.S. Mint and the social media account managers for the late Celia Cruz shared a photo of what the new quarters, featuring "The Queen of Salsa," will look like once they become available in 2024. Shortly after sharing posting the picture on Instagram, the news was shared by several media outlets, including NBC and Rolling Stone.
