Sha’Carri Richardson stunned Jamaican favorites Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where Richardson made a historic win in the 100m title on Monday (August 21).
Following the race, where Jackson took home silver and Fraser-Pryce bronze, the three women were seen talking to one another. While Shelly-Ann had her mouth covered, a mic picked up her telling Sha'Carri that it's been a long time since the U.S. won a gold medal. Sha'Carri then tells her that it's "because of you!"
Sha'Carri also spoke about winning the race in record time after starting in lane nine, the least favored spot for sprinters. Richardson told the media, "I was by myself in my own world, which honestly has been like that all my life,” she told reporters after the race.
"I’ve always been in my own world, my own element, so being in lane nine was perfect for me to do what it is I know to do and to focus in more on myself. And when I celebrated, it was because I felt like I did my best no matter what the result was going to be."
