Since going unselected in the 2021 NFL Draft, Josh Pederson has been a journeyman tight end, bouncing from Super Bowl contenders like the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, two teams that currently boast players at his position that are sure-fire future Hall of Famers (Travis Kelce and George Kittle). So, when the Jacksonville Jaguars picked him up as a free agent during the off-season, it represented his best chance of making it on an active roster, considering that the team's starting tight end, Evan Engram, has never reached the 800-receiving yards plateau once in his career. Another glaring aspect of the 2023 off-season signing is that the Jacksonville Jaguars head coach is Josh's dad, Doug Pederson. Led by Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars are the pre-season favorites to win the AFC South this year. Entering this week, the team had a 90-man roster featuring five tight ends (Evan Engram, Luke Farrell, Brenton Strange, Leonard Taylor, and Josh Pederson).

On Tuesday, every NFL had to trim their roster down to 53 men, per league rules. Unfortunately, the coach's son did not make the cut. Less than three weeks after playing his first preseason game for his dad, Josh had been released by the Jaguars. Josh's invitation to Jaguar's training camp drew comparisons to Tim Tebow's tryout with the team as a tight end back in 2021. Like Josh Pederson, Tim Tebow was also cut after a highly publicized stint with the team following training camp. Before joining the Jaguars in July, Josh Pederson played in the USFL for the Houston Gamblers. So, perhaps his journey will lead him back to a league where he found success as a starter.
