The illustrious boxing resume of Canelo Álvarez has only sustained two defeats. The first loss was to Floyd Mayweather (on September 9, 2013), and the second came nearly a decade later against Dmitry Bivol. Although Mayweather and Bivol maintained their undefeated records, Canelo (59-2) has taken on far more challengers throughout his career, having already faced 61 opponents professionally. On September 30th, the current IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring super-middleweight champion will faceoff against Jermell Charlo (35-1). The oddsmakers have penciled Canelo in as the favorite, with a 69% chance of winning. This is a notion that has many fight fans already looking ahead to a potential super fight with Terence "Bud Crawford (40-0), who recently said that he would be willing to move up to 168 lbs to make the dream matchup a reality.
During a recent interview with FightHype, Oscar De La Hoya, a boxing Hall of Famer and Canelo's ex-promoter, weighed in on a potential showdown between the two before explaining exactly why Bud is the far superior fighter in his opinion.
“I give (Terence) Crawford all the credit in the world for even thinking about possibly fighting Canelo,” De La Hoya said. “But if that fight ever takes place, I have Crawford one thousand percent...“Crawford is a big guy who can handle a Canelo because they’re the same size...Crawford is a guy who punches hard, but he doesn’t rely on his power. He relies on his footwork, he relies on his speed, on his changeup. He relies on his combinations. He relies on his mind, and I believe that Crawford is a way better boxer than Canelo.”
