Joseph Biggs, a former organizer of the far-right Proud Boys extremist group, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for spearheading the attack on the Capitol. Biggs' sentence is the second-longest in the Capitol riot cases so far; Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was sentenced to 18 years.

Biggs was convicted of seditious conspiracy, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding conspiracy to use force, intimidation, or threats to prevent officers of the United States from discharging their duties, interference with law enforcement during a civil disorder, and destruction of government property.

Biggs was facing a 33-year sentence, as prosecutors stated that his actions on Jan. 6, 2021, amounted to "terrorism." Biggs addressed the claims in court, telling the judge at his sentencing, "I know that I messed up that day, but I’m not a terrorist."
